In an attempt to relearn Photoshop after not using it for several months – Paint tool Sai is wonderful but it lacks some things only Photoshop offers – I decided to start a piece (I’ve only spent about and hour and a half on this thus far) based off the Japanese anime short from which my online pen name comes from.
Robotica Robotics is an anime short – only 10 minutes long – yet still remains one of my favourites despite all that I’ve watched. The anime explores the struggles of two robots – or A.I – who after being abandoned by their creator, attempt to find the meaning of ai. The significance of ai is that it is written as both 愛 meaning love, but also アイ for artificial intelligence. Struggling to understand a concept that even humans do not fully comprehend, and to understand what they themselves are, the anime goes on to explore briefly, yet in depth, themes of anxiety, suicide, and then ultimately, love.
I recommend this anime to anyone reading this, for its lovely story and interesting art style is something you won’t find anywhere else.
What started out as a self portrait quickly became this heterochromatic eyed, split tongue, monster boy.
I originally planned to abandon this work because it wasn’t going in the direction that I had planned. So rather than that, I decided to let my “hands do that talking”, as it were, and rather than force art, let it happen. The result being this monstrous creature with myself as the base.
With the upcoming release of the next instalment in the Fire Emblem series – Fire Emblem Echoes, a remake of the original Fire Emblem Gaiden, originally released in 1992 – I decided to draw one of the two main protagonists, Alm. His redesign was very interesting to me, and while the colours and his overall appearance as a whole haven’t altered much, his bringing into the 21st century FE art style made him more aesthetically appealing to look at. And so with this I recreated him in my own art style, with the appeal of contrasting, yet subtle and easy to look at colours.
While looking through some art the other day I came across a redraw I started (but never finished) back in December of 2016. I wanted to see how much my art had improved over the course of the two years of me owning a drawing tablet. Although I never finished the new version there are definitely clear improvements! This shows how much one can improve their skills in such a short time, and even then, last years art style differs greatly from the one I have now! Weird!
The original was drawn in mid 2014, and the new version, December 2016.
A very simplistic style today, flat colours and rough line work make for an interesting and easy combination. While many of my other pieces takes anywhere from 2-6 hours, this style allows me to finish work in as little as and hour. He is an original character based off myself – the shirt being the main inspiration.
Time to mass-post/cross-post some art from over the past few weeks.
